4th and 5th grade used clay to create 3D designs.

4th Grade Visual Art Standard 3.2.c- Invent and Discover to Create: Materials and processes can be used in traditional, unique and inventive ways. Students can problem-solve the various properties of a variety of tools and materials.

5th Grade Visual Arts Standard 1.1.c- Observe and Learn to Comprehend: Visual arts connect multiple characteristics of art. Students can investigate generalizations about works of art.

Students learned about the changing properties of clay. Students asked "Why do our sculptures need to be thin and hollow or have an opening?" Because, heat makes air rise and expand, so the air needs space to move around, or else it causes their sculpture to explode! Students were surprised to learn about physics and chemistry to their art making.
