Functional Art Brought to Your Home

For holiday crafting, we wanted to make our families something they could use and appreciate as art. This lesson initiated the question, "Why do people make art?"


To use your light-switch cover, take the screws out of a light-switch cover that matches in size, and screw the painted light-switch cover right over the cover that's already there.


Colorado Standard Visual Arts Learning Outcomes:


4th grade level expectation 2.2.c- Students can examine and debate the purpose of art across time and culture respecting and being mindful of culturally sensitive themes.


2nd Grade level expectation 4.1.a- Students can communicate observational responses to works of art from a variety of social, emotional, and historical contexts.


5th Grade level expectation 1.1.c- Students can investigate generalizations about works of art.


Essential Questions:


What is the purpose of art and art-making?


In what ways is art important to culture?


How does a community select art to show in public?


What boundaries, if any, exist in art and art-making?
