Monochromatic Painting- Planning

This lesson was loaded with planning methods, from sketching thumbnails to plan designs for large compositions, to drawing the grayscale, and painting color value scales to plan paintings with depth , lights colors, dark colors and dimension. After painting, 5th grade wrote, reflecting on which plans they utilized and negated to create their designs.

This lesson can also be used to teach the following standards to younger grade levels:


Fourth Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Investigate ideas of personal interest to plan and create works of visual art and design. Evidence Outcomes: a. Generate multiple ideas in order to select the idea that best communicates intended meaning, and b. Communicate a plan for completing works of visual art and design.


Third Grade, Standard 2. Envision and Critique to Reflect. Grade Level Expectation: 2. Synthesize ideas about personal works of art and imagine possible next steps. Evidence Outcome b. Envision solutions to artmaking problems.


Second Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Plan and create works of art by exploring various media and creating meaning through symbolization. Evidence Outcome c. Explain choices made in the artmaking process.


First Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Investigate the properties of materials to support the planning and making of works of art to communicate. Evidence Outcomes b. Describe the steps used in creating works of art.


Kindergarten, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Investigate the properties of materials to support the planning and making of works of art. Evidence Outcome a. Investigate various properties of tools and materials.
