Narrative Drawing- Responding to Art

Students looked at Chuck Boucher's illustration (first image) and asked themselves, "What book is the character reading? How is the character feeling? What's happening in the story to make the character feel that way?" Then they drew pictures and wrote stories to answer.


This project teaches 2020 Visual Arts Standards for Colorado State to the following age levels:


Kindergarten, Standard 1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Identify how artists use visual art and design to communicate.

Evidence Outcome, Students Can: a. Recognize that visual art and design can tell stories


First Grade, Standard 1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Investigate how visual art and design tell the many stories of people, places or things. Evidence Outcomes: Students Can: b. Identify how works of art express specific feelings using the language of visual art and design.


Fourth Grade, Standard 1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend. Grade Level Expectation: 2. Respond to an artist’s point of view being mindful of historical, contemporary and cultural context.

Evidence Outcome: b. Respond to works of art using inference and empathy.


Fifth Grade, Standard 1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend. Grade Level Expectation: 1. Investigate and analyze how specific points of view can be communicated through the language of visual art and design. Evidence Outcome: b. Infer intended meaning using the language of visual art and design.
