Selfie Collage-History of Portraiture

5th grade researched the history of portraiture before taking on the challenges of mix media in creating self portraits. In this project studied, compared, and practiced techniques throughout the ages, mostly focusing on photography, drawing, collage, and digital editing.



Art History of Portraiture:




Creating your Selfie Collage:


1- type into your google search engine: Google Drawings, and open the first link that pops up.


2- Click on the insert menu(mountains icon), and choose the camera icon. Click "allow" and press the camera button to take a self portrait photograph.


3- (Optional) Print out your photograph.


4- Use your photograph as a reference for drawing or tracing your facial features or drawings that you'd like to include in your collage.


5- Use scissors to cut out the drawings you want to use in your collage.


6- Glue your drawings directly onto your photograph. Then use google drawings to take a photo of it. (Option: Collage it into your original digital photo document.)


Or

Use google drawings to take pictures of your drawings. Then resize your drawings and layer them over the photograph.


7- Use google drawings tools to add in images from the web, text boxes, shapes, or to use the drawing tools. (Shapes are also found in the insert/mountains drop menu.)

This lesson was originally written to teach 5th Grade, 2020 Colorado State Visual Arts Standard 4.2- Relate and Connect to Transfer: Artists, viewers, and patrons respond to art from familiar and unfamiliar cultures. Evidence Outcome 4.2.c- Students can compare how artists work in different cultures and at different times in history.


This lesson can also teach younger age groups the following 2020 Colorado State Standards of Visual Arts:


4th Grade, Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer. Grade Level Expectation:1. Investigate and discuss how diverse communities address issues relevant to their culture, place and times. Evidence Outcome c. Compare how artists work in different cultures and at different times in history.


3rd Grade, Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer. Grade Level Expectation:1. Recognize how works of visual art and design communicate meaning both within a community and between diverse cultures. Evidence Outcome a. Investigate how visual art and design can make connections between subjects, disciplines or events.


2nd Grade, Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer. Grade Level Expectation:1. Observe and discuss how visual art and design are evident in the everyday life of communities. Evidence Outcome a. Recognize how visual art and design is interdisciplinary.
