Most of what we draw is constructed of simple geometric and organic shapes. Before drawing, you need to find two or three objects that you can trace onto paper. After tracing, free draw to transform shapes into a work of art.


This lesson was originally designed to teach Colorado State Standards of Visual Arts for Kindergarten and 3rd grade:


Kindergarten, Standard 2. Envision and Critique to Reflect

Grade Level Expectation: 1. Notice and discuss what can be seen in works of visual art and design

Evidence Outcome Students Can: a. Recognize that explorative play with materials can inspire ideas for visual art and design.


Third Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create

Grade Level Expectation: 1. Plan and create works of visual art and design recognizing various purposes and intentions.

Evidence Outcome, Students Can: b. Demonstrate understanding of how experimentation helps develop making art with purpose and intent.


This lesson can also be used to teach the following standards to other age levels:


First Grade, Standard 2. Envision and Critique to Reflect Grade Level Expectation: 1. Question and respond to the stories told and the feelings expressed in works of visual art and design. Evidence Outcome: b. Envision the potential of a material to be transformed to tell a story.


Second Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create Grade Level Expectation: 1. Plan and create works of art by exploring various media and creating meaning through symbolization. Evidence Outcomes a. Choose appropriate materials to make art.

Fourth Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create Grade Level Expectation: 2. Utilize media in traditional and inventive ways to communicate personal intent. Evidence Outcome: b. Problem-solve and persist to determine the outcome of a final product


Fifth Grade, Standard 2. Envision and Critique to Reflect

Grade Level Expectation: 2. Visualize intended meaning and determine a method of planning that best supports personal art making. Evidence Outcome: b. Identify various methods of planning for visual art and design .
